National Symbols: National Day

National Day of the People's Republic of China

Date

October 1

Background

The founding of the People’s Republic of China and the subsequent unfurling of the communist red flag by Mao Zedong took place on October 1, 1949.

Description

This holiday commemorates the founding of the People’s Republic of China. National Day is celebrated with much hoopla, with most streets, boulevards, highways, buildings, and houses festooned with the country’s colors and red lanterns. It is a long holiday, often extending for several days; thus, most Chinese, armed with cash, spend the holiday exploring popular sights around the country.

The festivities begin with the traditional raising of the red flag by honor guards in several key areas across the country and in special administrative regions like Hong Kong and Macau. Over 300,000 people turn out for the highly anticipated flag-raising ceremony held at the historic Tiananmen Square in the capital Beijing, where Chairman Mao proudly waved the flag in 1949. Other activities include parades, parties, and exhibits showcasing the country’s history and wealth, and everyone can enjoy the colorful lights, festive atmosphere, and fireworks shows.

Closures

Banks, government offices, business offices, and some retail stores.
