Students are actively engaged in their own learning through the application of creative thought, critical reasoning and inspired action. BCIS challenges students to ask questions, solve problems, learn skills and be creative. Teachers use research-based strategies to ensure outstanding student learning. The primary objective of the IB programme is to provide a world-class education that prepares students of different linguistic, cultural, and educational backgrounds with the intellectual, social, and critical perspectives necessary for university and indeed the rest of their lives. Beyond intellectual rigour and high academic standards, strong emphasis is placed on the ideals of international understanding and responsible citizenship. The profile of the IB student is that of a critical and compassionate thinker, an informed participant in local and world affairs, who values the shared humanity that binds all people together. The program also instills respect for the variety of cultures and attitudes that makes up our world. In the spirit of internationalism, and in recognition of the school's host country, students from Pre-K through to G10 are required to learn Chinese in addition to the language of instruction (English).
The school’s mission is “to educate and empower students to be compassionate and inspired people, who act for the good of all and for the sustainable development of the world”. This has given rise to the school motto: “Empowering and inspiring through challenge and compassion.” BCIS focuses on academic excellence and confidence building, while nurturing in our students a strong sense of social and environmental responsibility. Global citizenship is addressed in various ways, both in and outside the classroom. Curriculum content is carefully mapped to ensure that students are developing empathy, are aware of social justice and inequity, and understand the concept of sustainable development. They will also develop the skills which will enable them to challenge injustice, resolve arguments peacefully and think critically and creatively about world issues. Outside the classroom, students are engaged in a range of activities, including the Global Issues Group (GIG) and the Model United Nations (MUN). Student Council members are responsible for addressing issues of sustainability in the school. Throughout the school, students are engaged in a range of community service activities, including working for Habitat for Humanity and developing relationships with local orphanages. In addition, BCIS is committed to fostering an understanding of its host culture, China. All students learn Chinese, and Chinese culture is embedded in the curriculum through curriculum content, selection of texts (for example, the World Literature component of the IB Diploma English A1 course), and learning about annual events and celebrations, such as the Chinese Spring Festival. BCIS is also committed to reaching out to Chinese schools in the local community.

Concordia International School Shanghai

Website: www.concordiashanghai.org
Concordia International School Shanghai is located in the Jinqiao neighborhood in the heart of residential Pudong and east of Shanghai's financial hub. Founded in 1998, the school offers an outstanding, college-preparatory American-based curriculum and has long been recognized for its dedication to academic excellence. We've come a long way since the fall of 1998 when only 22 students were enrolled in the Elementary and Middle Schools.
Concordia International School Shanghai believes that an American curriculum suits the diverse needs of its students and families, and best prepares students for success outside of Concordia's halls. It outlines its preference for Western education in the following terms: 1) Western education emphasizes competition of the individual against him or herself rather than against classmates. At Concordia each student's progress and improvement is celebrated. It is more important for students to do their best, discover and develop individual talents, and set realistic goals. 2) Western education emphasizes the development of a well-rounded student. Concordia aims to educate students spiritually, aesthetically, intellectually, physically, socially and emotionally. American colleges and universities are more interested in students who have a variety of experiences than students with perfect scores. 3) Western education emphasizes the use of a developmentally appropriate curriculum. This does not indicate a less challenging or slower curriculum. Students are taught to think about the material they are learning, not just to memorize the facts. 4) Western education emphasizes the importance of cultural diversity in the school. We desire that students benefit from the wisdom of cultures other than their own. At Concordia we strive to create an atmosphere of inclusion, encouraging students of all nationalities and cultures to interact and learn from each other, both academically and socially. 5) Western education emphasizes that education is a process, not a performance. While a reasonable emphasis is placed on grades, report cards are only one indication of the progress a student is making. The process and learning that goes into an assignment or test is equally as important as the grade it receives. 6) Western education emphasizes the parents as partners in the educational process. A child's education is a team effort among the parents, the student and the school. All parties work together to prepare students for their future.
At the beginning of 2012 Concordia International School Shanghai had more than 1,200 students enrolled across the Elementary, Middle and High Schools and more than 130 highly credentialed faculty and administrators.
Concordia's state-of-the-art facilities are purpose-built with an environmental, self-sustainable focus, and are designed to give students the best possible environment in which to learn, play and develop artistic passion. Concordia has two libraries that meet the informational and recreational reading needs of the campus community. Between the Phoenix Center Library and the Elementary School Library, a diverse collection contains more than 35,000 in-house fiction and nonfiction resources. This collection includes books, audio books, CDs, and DVDs all of which are supplemented by electronic access to 45 subscription research databases and five electronic reading databases for Preschool-Grade 3.

The school offers an American curriculum and a college preparatory system of instruction. It is a member of the International Schools of China network and is accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
SYIS offers academically excellent programs to meet the intellectual, physical, and emotional needs of students. It is accredited by Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the accrediting body for public and private K-12 schools and colleges in California, the Pacific, and East Asia. SYIS first gained WASC accreditation in 2006. In 2012, it successfully completed the re-accreditation process and was granted another 6 year term of accreditation, the longest term granted by WASC. SYIS is undergoing accreditation by the National Center for School Curriculum and Textbook Development (NCCT). The school is also a member of the Association of Chinese and Mongolian International Schools (ACAMIS) and the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI).
SYIS has an enrollment of approximately 250 students.
Shenyang International School (SYIS) began in 1998 with 18 students in grades 1-6. Initially the school occupied five classrooms and some office space on the third floor of the Liaoning Vocational School. By the end of its first year, the school had grown to 29 students with three teachers. By the year 2000, the school had grown to an enrollment of 70 students and moved to a location at Quan Yuan, in the Dongling District of Shenyang. In the fall of 2005, the school moved to its third location in Sujiatun, a large suburban district in the south of Shenyang city. The Sujiatun campus was twice the size of the previous location which gave the school more room to expand. In the fall of 2008, SYIS changed location again. This time, the school moved to the Minzu Economic Development Zone in the He Ping District of Shenyang. The new location provided many improvements including a closer proximity to students’ residences, a kitchen and food service area, an outdoor playground with a permanent play structure, and more space for computer labs, offices and classrooms. In 2009, SYIS was able to convert one of the other buildings on the site into an auditorium and indoor gym room. In 2010, SYIS was granted use of the third building on the site and the high school expanded into this building. SYIS is exploring options for a new school location which would allow for its continued growth.

The 3e International School
Chaoyang District
Beijing, 100016
Fax: 10 6437 1987
Email: info@3einternationalschool.org
Website: www.3einternationalschool.org
Located in Beijing, 3e International School provides education to students prekindergarten, kindergarten, and early elementary grades. It opened in 2005 with three prekindergarten children, and in subsequent years added nursery, kindergarten, and early elementary grades. The school provides instruction in Mandarin and English. Students spend half of each school day in each language environment.
3e International School outlines its curriculum in the six areas below. Language Arts Effective language skills are critical in our being able to share our ideas and needs with others. In becoming literate, children expand their abilities to listen well to others, to express themselves skillfully in both speaking and writing, and to gain knowledge about their world through a variety of print and technology. In becoming bilingual, they significantly expand their insights about human experiences and their ability to move fluidly across cultures in living, working, and sharing understandings with others. The ultimate goal in 3e Language Arts is to have children accurately interpret the communications they receive from others and to develop the capability to communicate their ideas and feelings effectively to others. Strands include listening, speaking, reading, writing, and technology and media. Creative Arts As children grow to adulthood, an important part of their development will be to expand their sensibility about what is beautiful, enjoyable, useful, and good in their world and their role in appreciating, contributing to, or sustaining those qualities in the natural and human-created world. They learn about the arts by responding to what others have produced and by making their own art. At 3e, emphasis is placed on providing a broad spectrum of age-appropriate experiences related to the visual arts (e.g., drawing, painting, sculpture, print making, mosaics, and collage) and the performing arts (e.g., singing, dancing, use of musical instruments, dramatic experience, storytelling, and puppetry). Interpersonal and Intrapersonal Knowledge No arena of development is more important that a child's ability to develop intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligence. Major tasks of childhood are the need to build a strong sense of self and others. In the intrapersonal realm, our goal is to have children become "emotionally smart." To do this, they must become self-aware, appropriately assertive, manage their feelings and emotions effectively, handle stress, and take personal responsibility. In the interpersonal realm, 3e aims to have children develop the social skills that allow them to have positive relationships with others, to live within the bounds of societal expectations, and to participate well in groups. Curricular strands include emotional and social development. Global, Social, and Cultural Studies The ability to adapt to change and diversity will become a significantly important feature of children's lives as they grow into adulthood. Because of the rapidly changing global scene, it is predictable that they will live, work, and spend leisure time with others from many different cultures and language groups. Children who develop rejecting attitudes toward others will be hampered socially, economically, and politically in the eventual contributions they can make in increasingly complex societies. Our goal at 3e is to have children in our student body grow to not only respect differences but to genuinely appreciate and enjoy the learning opportunities that come from cultural/linguistic diversity. Strands include cultural competence, shared connections, geography, history, economic development, democracy and decision making. Cognitive Development As children mature cognitively, they continually construct new or expanded understanding about the world in which they live. They gather information about the physical nature of objects and other physical phenomena, discover what makes things happen and change, and how one thing interacts with another. Strong foundations in critical thinking, science, and mathematics provide the knowledge children need to build, modify, and integrate their thinking about concepts. The ultimate goal in this area is to have children acquire, apply, adapt, integrate, and evaluate knowledge. Strands include mathematics and science and other cognitive functioning. Substrands under mathematics are number sense and operations; algebra (patterns, relationships, and functions); geometry; measurement; representation, data analysis, and probability; and communication. Substrands under science and cognitive functioning include critical thinking and inquiry; life science; physical science; and earth science. Physical Development There is good evidence that fit and healthy children tend to become fit and healthy adults. Often, the patterns that children establish during their prekindergarten and elementary years become those that most will maintain throughout their lifetime. The goal in this curricular area is two-fold: to have children develop confidence and competence in the control and movement of their bodies; and to have children develop the attitudes, knowledge, skills and practices that lead to maintaining, respecting, and protecting their bodies. Strands include: Gross Motor, Fine Motor, Health and Safety.
Children from more than 25 nations attend 3e International School.
Classrooms are open and spacious and designed to accommodate both large and small group activities, maximum interaction between teachers and learners and independent access to learning materials and resources. Glass walls foster a sense of community, and facilitate growth and development. A large garden and green play area offers opportunities for exploration and outdoor inquiry, providing a rich natural environment unusual for downtown Beijing. Large multipurpose gym spaces facilitate indoor large motor activities and ensure that children are able to move their body daily, regardless of weather restrictions. It also provides space for large group activities, performances and presentations. The Anne K. Soderman Library and media center houses upwards of 15,000 volumes in English and Chinese, providing a rich literary resource for teachers and families. Regular story times and events are held in the library to foster children’s love for the written word.

Yew Chung International School of Shanghai (YCIS Shanghai) has four campuses across the city of Shanghai (Hongqiao, Gubei, Regency Park, and Century Park), serving serves students from age 2 to 18. The school belongs to a network of five Yew Chung International Schools in China (Shanghai, Beijing, Hong Kong, Chongqing, and Qingdao) and one in the United States (Silicon Valley, California). YCIS Shanghai offers the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and is a fully accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) World School.
Yew Chung International School of Shanghai (YCIS Shanghai) offers Early Childhood Education to Primary and Secondary education programmes. Using an international curriculum based on the framework and schemes of work from the National Curriculum for England (NCE), the school also ensures a smooth transition between different Key Stage levels of education through to graduation. One major goal of YCIS Shanghai is to develop lifelong learners that will still be highly inquisitive long after their formative education has been completed. The Key Stage levels nurture the students by ripening their skills and abilities to work independently and co-operatively, teaching them to think critically rather than focusing simply on the acquisition of knowledge, and by developing a global mindset tolerant of all things and everyone. While English is the primary language of instruction, YCIS Shanghai also focuses on bilingual learning. A strong Chinese language studies programme and the co-teaching of Western and Chinese teachers in classrooms expose students to two of the world's most commonly used languages. Students are expected to attain a high level of fluency in both oral and written English and Chinese. Years 10 and 11 students study the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) Programme which is equivalent to North American Grades 9 and 10. Years 12 and 13 centre on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. YCIS Shanghai is a fully accredited IB World School.
YCIS brings together the East and the West and implements a bilingual and co-cultural program through a Co-Principal and Co-Teaching model. Two Co-Principals, one Western and one Chinese, work in partnership to provide academic leadership to the school. They consult, collaborate, support and complement each other and share equal authority and accountability over the school operation. They jointly create and lead a harmonious learning community, and provide a role model of effective cross-cultural collaboration. Two fully qualified Co-Teachers, one Western and one Chinese, serve as teaching partners in each of the Early Childhood and Primary classrooms and share all responsibilities over the care and education of students in class. They plan and work together to provide students with a variety of learning experiences, help students develop English and Chinese communication skills, and role-model appreciation and respect for diversity. This model adds strengths to the academic program, ensures equity in status between two world languages and cultures throughout the school, and reinforces students' social and cultural competence.
