Founded in 1898, Peking University (colloquially known as Beida) is known throughout China for its contribution to modern Chinese literature, poetry, and art, as well as the beauty of the traditional Chinese architecture on its campus grounds. While its campus is recognized as a stimulating, creative environment, it is also held in particularly high esteem for the quality of its academic teaching in pure and applied sciences, humanities, management, and education. Peking University's School of International Studies also launched joint degree programs with London School of Economics and Waseda University in Japan.

Shanghai Jiaotong University (SJTU) grew out of the merger of a number of public schools in the Shanghai region toward the end of the 19th Century. This institution operates from six different campuses across Shanghai, including an agricultural college and teaching hospital. There are 20 academic schools across the different campuses offering all major academic disciplines. The university offers a number of highly specialized schools, such as plastics technology and information security engineering.

Xi'an Jiaotong University (XJTU) is located in Xi'an, the ancient capital of China. As one of the oldest universities in China, Xi'an Jiaotong University is a prestigious establishment with strong programs in science, engineering, medicine, economics, management, arts, language, and law. In a partnership with the University of Liverpool (UK), XTJU opened a joint University in Suzhou, the Xi'an Jiaotong-Liverpool University (XJTLU). This is an independent university and has become the first Sino-British university to be approved by the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Tsinghua University (colloquially known as Qinghua) is consistently ranked as first or second in mainland China by virtually all national and international university ranking schemes. The main university campus, located on the former site of the Qing Dynasty royal gardens, retains Chinese-style landscaping, but many of its buildings are Western-style, reflecting a significant American influence in the university's history. The university has 21 schools and 59 departments with faculties in science, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, history, philosophy, economics, management, education and art.

Fudan University is considered one of the most prestigious schools in China. Founded in 1905 as Fudan Public School, the institution began to offer college-level programs in 1917, initially in the arts, sciences, and business. Following the founding of the People's Republic of China, Fudan became one of the national elite universities. Today the university offers bachelor's degrees in 70 academic disciplines and master’s degrees in more than 200.

Zhejiang University (ZJU, or colloquially, Zheda) can trace its origins back to 1897, making it one of China's oldest universities. The modern university was created as recently as 1998 as a combination of four existing major universities that had developed in the Hangzhou region over the previous 50 years. It has a strong teaching profile in both science and engineering disciplines, where it has achieved second place in China's national university ranking scheme.

Nanjing University (NJU, or colloquially, Nándà) claims to be the oldest existing higher learning institution in the world with a history dating back to the first year of Yong'an reign (258 AD). While many dispute this history, the modern university is known to originate from a high school in the region in 1915. Traditionally it has been a center for science study, with courses covering a wide diversity of physical and natural science disciplines. There are four campuses; Xianlin, Gulou, Pukou, and Suzhou.
