Life Stages: Old Age
Reverence
Traditionally, Chinese society has highly revered its elderly, following the Confucian dictum of venerating elders and ancestors. After retirement, old people usually live with their grown children and help in looking after their grandchildren, especially when both parents work. Older people also often take up community and social work after their retirement.
Oversight and Care
Many married children stay with their parents due to the shortage and high cost of housing. Even though many children leave their parents’ homes after marriage, they still consider taking care of their elderly and sick parents their duty—especially the eldest son. In the case of the ill health of their parents, children will generally make decisions on their behalf.
